Laurie explains the difference between Paul Carrack & Eric Stewart on Things We Do For Love p 2

English pop/R&B singer Paul Carrack wanted to join 10cc to perform lead on "The Things We Do For Love" as a special guest with Eric Stewart, Graham Gouldman, The Mike Sammes Singers and The Ron Hicklin Singers singing in the background on their 1977 album, "Deceptive Bends", which I thought the personnel was:

Lead vocal - Paul Carrack
Acoustic guitar, bass guitar, electric guitar, tambourine: Graham Gouldman
Gong, drums, tambourine: Paul Burgess
organ, guitar, piano: Eric Stewart
handclaps: Paul and Graham
Background vocals: The Ron Hicklin Singers (Ron Hicklin, Tom Bahler, Jim Haas), The Mike Sammes Singers, Graham Gouldman and Eric Stewart

But wrong! To my surprise it was Eric Stewart singing the lead on that song, so the personnel is:

Bass Guitar, Electric Guitar, Handclaps, Backing Vocals, Acoustic Guitar, Tambourine – Graham Gouldman
Drums, Tambourine, Handclaps, Gong – Paul Burgess
Lead Vocals, Lead Guitar, Backing Vocals, Piano, Organ – Eric Stewart

Here's the story:

"The Things We Do for Love" is a Paul Carrack-style song by British band 10cc, released as a single in 1976. It later featured on the album Deceptive Bends released in 1977 and was the group's first release after the departure of band members Godley and Creme. The song was a huge hit in various countries worldwide, reaching number one in Canada,[2] as well as peaking at number 6 in the UK,[3] number 5 in the US[4] and Australia, number 13 in the Netherlands,[5] and number 2 in Ireland.[6]
