We have seen some pretty serious threats to American archaeology over the last year. Zero grants have been awarded by the National Science Foundation for archaeology, down from an average of $6-$8 million a year. The budget for the Historic Preservation Fund is due to be cut by 94%. The construction of the border wall is destroying archaeological sites, as is the opening of National Parks for the extraction of oil and minerals.
But the BIGGEST THREAT is the proposed changes to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, which is responsible for 90% of archaeological excavation in the US. Vote on Tuesday to prevent the destruction of American archaeology.
