The Rise and Fall of FC Nantes

FC Nantes were once one of the most successful clubs in French football. With eight French league titles, a celebrated youth academy and a distinctive style of play known as the Nantes Way, they built a footballing identity that lasted for decades. But by 2026, Nantes were back in Ligue 2.

This documentary explores the rise and fall of FC Nantes, from the arrival of José Arribas in 1960 to the club's great championship-winning teams under Jean-Claude Suaudeau and Raynald Denoueix.

It looks back at Nantes' remarkable 1994–95 season, their run to the 1996 Champions League semi-finals, and their eighth French championship in 2001. It also examines the changes in ownership and management that followed, the end of 44 consecutive seasons in France's top division in 2007, and the turbulent years under Waldemar Kita.

Along the way, we revisit the players, managers and ideas that shaped FC Nantes, the club's 2022 Coupe de France triumph, and the events surrounding their relegation in 2026.

This is the story of how FC Nantes became one of France's most respected football clubs, what made their approach so successful, and how that continuity was gradually lost.
