How Microsoft Finally Killed Windows 9x Without Breaking Everything

How could it keep older Windows 95 and 98 applications working?

The answer included a hidden compatibility database. Using the Application Compatibility Toolkit 3.0, I explore the files behind it, look at fixes for real applications such as Novell Client 32 and Outlook 97, and build a custom database for a program I wrote that insists it needs Windows 98.

Then Process Explorer lets us see the compatibility DLLs loaded into the program when the shim is active.

This isn’t emulation, and a compatibility fix couldn’t make every old application work. It was a way for Windows to apply targeted adjustments to particular programs often without the user having to do anything.
