Bulgaria joined the Axis on 1 March 1941 and let German troops march through to invade Greece and Yugoslavia. In December 1941 it declared a "symbolic" war on Britain and the United States, and from late 1943 Allied bombers hit Sofia. But Tsar Boris III never declared war on the Soviet Union, and Bulgaria kept diplomatic relations with Moscow for the whole war.
Why? Russia's war of 1877-78 ended Ottoman rule in Bulgaria (Sofia's Monument to the Tsar Liberator honours Alexander II), the public was strongly pro-Russian, Boris doubted his army would fight Russians, and he kept troops at home to watch Turkey. After a tense meeting with Hitler in August 1943, Boris died on 28 August, aged 49. Poison was suspected but never proven. Then on 5 September 1944 the USSR declared war on Bulgaria anyway. Bulgaria declared war on Germany on 8 September, a coup followed on 9 September, and its war with the Soviet Union was over in four days.
