Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is one of the most painful experiences in a person’s life. For cats, this transition is often accompanied by a quiet, almost mystical tragedy. Since cats, evolutionarily speaking, were small solitary hunters left to fend for themselves, showing signs of frailty or weakness in the wild means a certain death at the hands of predators. Cats have internalized their instinct for self-preservation so deeply that they masterfully conceal pain and the onset of the dying process right up until the very last second. Many people expect dramatic signs of illness, such as loud whining or constantly lying down. In reality, however, the end of a cat’s life is almost always heralded by highly subtle neurological and behavioral changes.
