IsoDoom v0.2.0 - Someone Turned DOOM Into an Isometric Game

After IsoWulf, you knew it was coming. You knew it was only a matter of time.

Now some mad scientist has dragged DOOM into a neighboring dimension and returned with IsoDoom, a mod that lets you play the classic games from an isometric perspective. The geometry has been rearranged. The demons are still damn angry.

I absolutely love the new look. DOOM plays surprisingly well from this viewpoint, although there are a few peculiar side effects. If a wall switch is south of the view, you sometimes won't see it. And because DOOM is a far more vertical creature than Wolfenstein 3D, there are moments when the architecture folds in on itself and it becomes difficult to tell what is above you, below you, or merely waiting for you with a fireball.

These are minor complaints, though. The important thing is that this mod is fantastic.

Playing IsoDoom feels like peering into a classified UAC tactical simulation. You watch demons emerge from hidden passages, zombiemen mobilize behind corners, and entire ambushes assemble themselves like insects beneath a lifted stone. Enemies no longer materialize from the future. You see them coming. You watch the machinery of Hell organizing itself before you pull the trigger.

The new perspective also changes how you read the maps. I've been playing DOOM for as long as I can remember, yet IsoDoom showed me secrets I had somehow missed for decades. Familiar levels become strange places again. Corridors you've walked a thousand times suddenly reveal hidden pockets, forgotten passages, and suspicious patches of wall quietly keeping their secrets.

This is only version 0.2.0, an early alpha release, which means the experiment is just beginning. What is already here is immensely fun, and I highly recommend giving it a try.

As far as I know, it's compatible with DOOM, DOOM II, and the other official IWADs. It automatically searches for IWADs, so there's no complicated setup. Just click, play, and enjoy the isometric demon genocide.
