Lyrics:
Oh, my maiden, my beloved, Why have you fallen silent in the night? Where yesterday you sang so sweetly, Today, has your heart turned against me?
Beneath your window, white and bright, The lilac bloomed, then faded away. For three years I have waited for you, Three long years of loneliness.
Oh, my heart, oh, my aching heart, Who has stolen away your sun? Who has taken your love from me, Who has put my morning light out?
The ash tree weeps beside the river, The moon fades over the forest. You belong to another, I belong to another, And our love is an endless rain.
Do you remember, beneath the old pear tree, How we swore our vows in silence? You gave me a sprig of wild geranium, And I gave you all my youth.
The shepherd’s flutes played out across the fields, Stars fell from the heavens above. You laughed, your face alight with joy, And I gazed at you, spellbound.
Oh, my heart, oh, my aching heart, Who has stolen away your sun? Who has taken your love from me, Who has put my morning light out?
The ash tree weeps beside the river, The moon fades over the forest. You belong to another, I belong to another, And our love is an endless rain.
Mother says, “Time will heal you, Every wound will fall asleep.” But whenever the wind begins to blow, I hear your footsteps once again.
Every autumn, I wait for you. Every winter, I dream of you. And come spring, when the cherry blossoms bloom, I wake once more without you.
Oh, God above, if You are able, Send me down her path within a dream. Let me see her just one more time, Before the final bell tolls.
Oh, my heart, oh, my aching heart, Do not curse the love we knew. Even the most beautiful of loves Sometimes leaves us with a song.
Let the Balkan Mountains guard our traces. Let the Rila Mountains bury them deep Beneath their endless fields of snow.
And if one day you return To me through the mists of night, You will find the old pear tree… And beneath it, our love.
Oh, my beloved… Oh, my youth… Some loves never truly die— They simply become a folk song.
