In this clip from Rosebud, actor Tama Matheson brings Tchaikovsky to life to talk about growing up gay in Imperial Russia. He describes first realising his feelings for a fellow pupil at the School of Jurisprudence, the influence of his openly gay friend Apuktin, and the moment a stranger publicly denounced him and his friends at a St Petersburg restaurant — an incident followed by their names appearing in the city's papers the next day. He explains the real legal danger he lived under, where homosexuality was punishable by public disgrace, loss of civil rights and exile to Siberia, and reflects on a lifetime spent praying to be "as other men."
This performance is drawn from Tama Matheson's research and existing stage work on Tchaikovsky, together with the composer's letters and correspondence.
