The History of the Balkans: Every Year (1800–2024)

In 1800 almost the whole peninsula was Ottoman. Watch Serbia, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania and Montenegro break away, Yugoslavia rise and fall twice, and twelve countries emerge – one year at a time, slowed to two seconds per year.

0:00 1800 – Ottoman Balkans
0:48 1821 – Greek independence
2:47 1878 – Congress of Berlin
3:59 1912 – The Balkan Wars
4:16 1918 – Yugoslavia is born
5:05 1941 – World War II and Tito's federation
6:48 1991 – Yugoslavia breaks apart
7:24 2006 – Twelve countries

The map pauses on the years of the key events. Occupied territories are hatched in the colour of the occupied country.
