Marta Kos in Sofia: “Bulgaria is a gateway to Europe” as Corridor VIII takes centre stage

European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos arrived in Sofia for the International Ministerial Conference on Corridor VIII, bringing together officials and regional partners around one of Southeast Europe’s key connectivity projects.

The atmosphere in Sofia centred on transport links, energy connectivity, regional stability and the wider integration of the Western Balkans with the European Union.
“Bulgaria is a gateway to Europe for the Black Sea region, as well as for Turkey.”

Kos highlighted the role of Bulgaria as a strategic connection point between the Black Sea region, Turkey, the Western Balkans and the rest of Europe. She also said more than 130 projects are under way across the Western Balkans involving roads, railways and border crossings.

The conference focused on the strategic importance of Corridor VIII, including transport and energy links, economic growth, regional stability and Euro-Atlantic integration.
Kos also placed the discussion in the broader context of EU enlargement.
“One day the entire Western Balkans will be part of our Europe.”

Her message in Sofia was that better infrastructure is not only about roads and railways, but about bringing countries, economies and people closer together.

The visit continues on 9 October in Edirne, where Kos is due to attend the opening of the Çerkezköy–Kapıkule section of the Halkalı–Kapıkule railway, a major connection between Istanbul and the Bulgarian border.
