A rare look at the first professional meeting between future World Heavyweight Champion Joe Frazier and Argentine heavyweight Oscar Bonavena at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Bonavena gave the undefeated Frazier one of the toughest fights of his young professional career. The 205-pound Argentine knocked Frazier down twice in the second round, but Frazier recovered and fought back with a relentless attack over the remaining rounds.
After 10 rounds, Frazier won by split decision. Referee Mark Conn and judge Joe Eppy scored the fight for Frazier, while judge Nick Gamboli scored it for Bonavena. The decision was unpopular with much of the 9,069-person crowd, which had strongly supported the Argentine challenger.
