Why Did Dimitri Really Betray Niko? It Was Never About Bulgarin's Money - GTA 4 Lore Explained

Why did Dimitri Rascalov betray Niko Bellic? GTA 4 gives you an answer in one cutscene: an old debt, a man from the past, an abandoned warehouse in East Hook. Case closed. Except it doesn't add up. The money wasn't Dimitri's. Niko didn't owe him a dollar. And Niko had just solved the biggest problem of Dimitri's life.

In this video we open a full investigation into one of the most hated villains in the entire Grand Theft Auto series. Every chapter is one piece of evidence, and every piece of evidence answers the same question from a different angle: what was the real reason?

We go all the way back to a prison camp in Siberia and the brotherhood between Dimitri and Mikhail Faustin. We break down the basement in Hove Beach, the death of Lenny Petrovic, the conversation on the bench, and the phone call where Dimitri finally explains himself. We look at cut dialogue hidden in the game files, Niko's past on the Adriatic, the real Russian mob of Brighton Beach that inspired the story, and the literary references Rockstar buried in the mission names.

On the board: six popular theories, three theories of our own, and one for the defense. Was it the debt? Was it fear? Did Dimitri want Niko dead from day one? Or was he forced into it? By the end of the video, only one answer survives.

Was Faustin right about his best friend? Who really saved Niko in that basement? And what does the choice between Deal and Revenge tell us about the man behind the glasses? Watch until the verdict and tell me in the comments which theory you believe.
