Building a 64GB VRAM Local AI Workstation with Intel Xeon

We’re building a new rackmount workstation around Micro Center’s Intel Xeon 658X bundle, with local AI as the main goal.

This build uses the Intel Xeon 658X, ASUS Pro WS W890E-SAGE SE motherboard, 128GB of ECC memory, two Intel Arc Pro B70 GPUs with 32GB of VRAM each, and a Samsung 9100 Pro SSD inside a SilverStone RM44 4U rackmount chassis. With 64GB of total GPU memory, eight-channel memory support, and 128 PCIe lanes available on the platform, there’s a lot of room to expand this system for larger AI workloads and multi-GPU configurations.

Jordan also walks through the more unusual parts of building on Xeon, including the LGA 4710-2 socket, carrier-frame CPU installation, the TR30 mounting process, Xeon-specific memory population, the included DDR5 cooling fan, Gen 5 storage, and workstation power considerations.

Once the hardware is together, we test the system with local AI workloads using LM Studio and multiple language models. We also introduce a new automated Micro Center local-AI benchmark designed to look beyond simple short prompts and measure performance with both short and long-context workloads across repeated runs.

We test:
Short and long-context prompts
Prefill performance
Time to first token
Output tokens per second
Single-GPU vs. dual-GPU behavior
Larger models that spill into system memory
Practical multi-GPU scaling
This system will eventually live in the Micro Center studio rack alongside our AMD workstation so we can compare platforms and continue testing local AI, DaVinci Resolve integrations, agentic workflows, and larger AI models.
