The first optical disc was the size of a vinyl record and you had to flip it halfway through a movie. The latest holds 100 gigabytes of 4K HDR video on a disc you can hold with one finger. Between those two extremes sits every format that shaped how the world watched movies, played games, installed software, and burned mixtapes.
Sixteen optical disc formats from 1978 to today. A laser reading analog video off a 30-centimeter platter. The CD that killed vinyl records and cassette tapes in a decade. A recordable disc so fragile that opening another program during the burn turned it into a coaster. A format that flopped in the West but was the first disc experience for millions across Southeast Asia. A tiny Sony disc inside a protective case that was beloved, affordable too late, and crushed by the MP3 player. A console-exclusive format that got pirated so badly it may have killed Sega's hardware business. And a format war between blue and red lasers that ended when the studios picked a side.
