Can a Lightweight Linux Distro Save This 15-Year-Old Mini Laptop?

In this video, I’m installing Alpine Linux on a Samsung NC108 netbook from 2011, powered by an Intel Atom N455, GMA 3150 graphics, and just 2GB of RAM.

Alpine Linux is known for being extremely lightweight, minimal, and resource-efficient — exactly what an old netbook like this needs. But getting Alpine Linux running as a proper desktop takes a little more work than you might expect.

I’ll go through the Alpine Linux installation, set up the XFCE desktop, check RAM and storage usage, and see how this old netbook handles real-world tasks like Firefox, Reddit, YouTube, LibreOffice, and GIMP.

And of course, we have to try gaming.

So I tried running Minecraft on this ancient Atom-powered netbook. The results are... interesting.

Can Alpine Linux actually make an old netbook useful again? And how far can 15-year-old hardware really go in 2026?
