Before it became a multi-billion-dollar esports giant, Counter-Strike’s map pool was essentially the wild west. With the original developers outsourcing level design to random Half-Life modders, the game was packed with wild, experimental layouts that constantly pushed the engine to its breaking point.

Across those early versions, players fought through nuclear missile silos modeled on Fallout, navigated corridors ripped directly from GoldenEye 007, and dodged mounted heavy machine guns behind reinforced concrete. But when Valve stepped in to turn the mod into a retail product, dozens of these original environments were discarded, unlinked from the code, and erased before the game even launched.

So today, we’re taking a deep dive into the official maps of Counter-Strike’s Beta era that history completely forgot.
