During this period, American Top 40 was temporarily off the air, but Casey Kasem continued his famous countdown tradition with Casey's Top 40, using the Radio & Records CHR/Pop chart. For historical continuity, our American Top 40 series follows Casey's countdown during these missing years before he returned to the AT40 name in 1998.

Musically, 1997 stood at the crossroads of two eras. No Doubt, The Wallflowers, Third Eye Blind, Matchbox Twenty and Sugar Ray represented alternative rock's continued mainstream dominance, while Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls, Hanson and Savage Garden announced the arrival of a new pop generation.

R&B remained a major force through En Vogue, Toni Braxton, Blackstreet, Babyface, Monica and Usher, while international hits from The Cardigans, Robyn, OMC, Aqua, Mark Morrison and others made American Top 40 radio increasingly global.
