Economist and Columbia University professor Jeffrey Sachs launched a blistering critique of U.S. President Donald Trump, questioning his fitness for office and warning about the concentration of war-making power in the American presidency.
Sachs described the current geopolitical situation as potentially the "most dangerous moment in the world since World War II" and argued that Trump's shifting rhetoric between military escalation and negotiations highlights deeper problems in the U.S. political system. He also criticised Congress for failing to exercise sufficient oversight over presidential war powers and accused major U.S. media outlets of normalising what he views as increasingly erratic political behaviour.
Sachs went on to argue that unchecked presidential power and decades of U.S. military interventions have created a dangerous system, warning that Trump's alleged lack of "self-control" could further increase global risks. The psychological and political assessments expressed are Sachs' own views.
