A memorandum of understanding signed by President Trump and Iran is set to expire on Monday, August 17, marking 60 days since the agreement was established. The memorandum called for an immediate end to military conflict between both sides and provided a maximum of 60 days to discuss Iran's nuclear program. Reports indicate limited diplomatic progress toward opening the Strait of Hormuz and addressing nuclear ambitions as attacks on shipping vessels in the waterway continue.
President Trump spoke on August 14 about the conflict and the ongoing maritime blockade in the region. "And after we finish defeating Iran, which is being very badly defeated... Pretty soon I'll be declaring the Hormuz Strait, a territory of the United States.... Essentially, that's what we have, the blockade. No ships get through unless we want them to," Trump said.
Meanwhile, military developments continue between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon following violations of the ceasefire that left three Israeli soldiers wounded. Israel Prime Minister Office International Spokesperson Doron Spielman stated, "Hezbollah committed two major violations today. They struck Israeli troops who were operating in the security zone in contravention of the ceasefire agreement. And then when Israel responded, they moved civilians inside their terrorist headquarters. They used their own civilians as human shields so that later on they could point at Israel and say that Israel is targeting civilians, which we are not doing." The IDF warned residents of northern Israel to prepare for loud explosions along the border as operations proceed.
