I Installed PrimeOS on an Old PC… And I Don’t Want to Go Back to Windows!
What happens when you take a 12-year-old office PC with just 4GB of RAM and replace Windows with Android? That’s exactly what I wanted to find out by installing PrimeOS on an old Dell OptiPlex 7020!
Instead of upgrading the hardware, I kept the original Intel Core i5-4590 and 4GB of RAM to see whether PrimeOS could actually breathe new life into this aging machine. The version I tested is based on Android 11, which may sound outdated, but the results were much more impressive than I expected.
Installation was ridiculously fast, boot times were surprisingly short, and PrimeOS transformed the OptiPlex into a full Android desktop complete with a taskbar, multi-window support, Alt+Tab multitasking, mouse and keyboard controls, and access to the Google Play Store.
I tested everyday web browsing on Reddit, Wikipedia and Google Maps, pushed YouTube playback all the way up to 4K, and installed popular apps like Spotify, Facebook and Telegram. Even with multiple browser tabs open, PrimeOS managed the limited 4GB of RAM surprisingly well.
Of course, I had to test gaming too! PrimeOS includes its own Gaming Center and keyboard mapping tools, so I tried Subway Surfers, Fruit Ninja, Grimvalor, Free Fire, and even some retro console emulation with RetroArch. Some games worked incredibly well, while others exposed a few interesting compatibility problems.
It definitely isn’t perfect—Netflix refused to work, Free Fire got stuck loading, and there were a few other quirks along the way. But considering how old and limited this PC is, PrimeOS genuinely surprised me.
So, could PrimeOS be a better way to give an old PC a second life instead of struggling with Windows?
