Colombia’s new President Abelardo de la Espriella has declared a tougher new security era, promising a major crackdown on drug cartels, armed groups and cocaine production. In his first major address from Cali’s Pichincha Battalion, De la Espriella announced that Colombia would join U.S. President Donald Trump’s Shield of the Americas, a regional anti-cartel coalition focused on intelligence sharing and joint action against organised crime and drug trafficking. The president, known by his campaign nickname “El Tigre,” also vowed to end negotiations with armed groups, create an official list of “narco-terrorist groups” and build “mega-prisons” for those considered the greatest threats to national security. eclaring that dialogue with criminals is over, De la Espriella delivered a blunt warning: “The Tiger has arrived and you will know how hard it bites.” He also made the eradication of illicit coca crops a “national priority,” promising to target the source of Colombia’s cocaine trade.
