Gov. Wes Moore said the Preakness will survive despite the new championship series announcement that left a lot of questions about the future of racing in Maryland. WBAL-TV 11 News continued our team coverage with a look at the perspective from a man who's extensively followed racing, Frank Vespe, the owner of The Racing Biz He said his initial response to the news is that it's terrible, but he also said there's a need for patience to see how this all really plays out. "I don't even know if this will ultimately come to fruition in the form that it's been announced given the things that still have to happen," Vespe said. "I feel like it's less evil genius and more petulant kid." Vespe has been covering and following horse racing for years. He thinks the move from Churchill Downs, announcing the creation of a new six race championship series that would skip the Preakness Stakes, seems like a reactionary response out of anger. Earlier reports detail how Churchill Downs didn't get the rights to the Preakness States intellectual property, but Vespe said this reaction could backfire. "They claim that they want this to be the next generation of fans-- how are you going to do that when you've killed the only thing in horse racing that people know? The Triple Crown," Vespe said.
