The Untold Story Behind Why the Golden Goal Rule Was Removed

For nearly a decade, football had one of the most controversial rules in the sport’s history.

The Golden Goal.

If a team scored during extra time… the match ended instantly.

The rule produced some of football’s most unforgettable moments, including Oliver Bierhoff’s winner in the UEFA Euro 1996 Final and David Trezeguet’s famous strike in the UEFA Euro 2000 Final. It also decided dramatic FIFA World Cup knockout matches featuring Laurent Blanc, South Korea, and Türkiye.

But despite those iconic moments, the Golden Goal was eventually abolished.
