In 2012 the company behind Rangers was liquidated, and Rangers never stopped playing. Scotland has argued about whether it is the same club ever since.

This is what actually happens when a famous football club dies. Eight of them, explained: the Glasgow giant sold off in pieces and made to restart in the fourth division; the New York Cosmos, who signed Pele and drew 77,691 people, and folded eight years later in front of 8,677; Parma, four European trophies, killed by a dairy company's accounting fraud; Wimbledon, who beat Liverpool in an FA Cup final and were then moved sixty miles by a three-person commission; Bordeaux and Boavista, two historic clubs owned by the same man, both dying in the same summer; and Brescia Calcio, where Baggio retired and Pep Guardiola was signed to replace Andrea Pirlo, wound up by an Italian court in July 2026 after 114 years.

The thing all eight have in common is the thing nobody says out loud. What a court can liquidate is a company. A club is something else.
