After nearly getting skunked the week before at Point Medanos Jetty at the Entrance of Mission Bay, I knew I had some making up to do so I headed to Fiesta Island inside of beautiful Mission Bay, located in San Diego, California.
This trip was all about redemption, so I made it a point to arrive before first light—about 20 minutes before sunrise—to put myself in the best position possible for a productive morning bite.
There's something special about having the beachfront all to yourself before sunrise. Sipping on a hot cup of coffee while watching the first light creep over Mission Bay, palm trees swaying in the distance, and planes flying overhead is a feeling that's hard to put into words. It's something every Southern California angler should experience at least once.
The action started almost immediately! Within the first six minutes of my first cast, I landed two baby stingrays, and from there the bite never really slowed down. Fortunately, the plan worked out even better than I could have imagined, producing an incredible session that included three legal-sized Spotted Bay Bass that absolutely crushed the bait and put up those hard-fighting, heavy head-shaking battles we all love.

✅ 3 Legal Spotted Bay Bass
✅ 5 Round Rays
11 Fish Total!
The bait of choice for this session was live lugworms and cut shrimp, two proven baits that continue to get the job done in Mission Bay.
