A two-block radius around Empire Tower in Glen Burnie will remain closed until further notice, after the Anne Arundel County Department of Inspections and Permits (DIP) deemed the building not structurally sound Thursday evening.
The Anne Arundel County Fire Department confirmed the ruling by the DIP to WBAL-TV 11 News around 7 p.m. Thursday evening.
The 10-story building is located in the 7300 block of Ritchie Highway and according to a real estate brochure, has a two-story parking garage.
The Anne Arundel Fire Department said work was being completed in the parking garage that exposed the rebar inside of the concrete, leading to concerns about the building's structural integrity.
"They got called for earlier today that there was a possible collapse," said Captain Sheldon Neal with Anne Arundel County Fire Department. "We were able to evacuate approximately one hundred people from the building, uninjured, everyone is safe."
Neal said no collapse happened but there was damage to the lower level of the building.
