Nearly unprecedented damage leaves thousands without power in Maryland

Thousands of Maryland residents are dealing with power outages after severe storms over the weekend, as BGE crews work tirelessly to repair damaged poles and power lines. "This is the first time we’ve ever lost power," said a woman from Middle River, whose lights went out Monday afternoon as crews worked to fix a pole. She is not the only one affected. "I own other business on Back River Neck Road is out on power, the gas station don’t have power, a lot of houses don’t have power," another resident said. Crews spent Monday repairing a snapped power pole in Middle River, while in Glen Burnie, several downed power lines and poles fell onto the light rail tracks near Cromwell Station. "That damage is nearly unprecedented. There is extensive by those light rail tracks, 24 poles broken or damaged, those poles range from 65 feet to 100," said Nick Alexopulos, a spokesperson for BGE. Alexopulos said crews are working around the clock to restore power and have brought in hundreds of external crews to assist, with more arriving Monday night into Tuesday. "These jobs represent outages that were caused by a lot of damage. And the work to complete the job is complex and is going to take some time," Alexopulos said. He added that BGE is aiming to restore power to the majority of customers by Wednesday night.
