Baltimore County town hall in Towson tackles crime concerns

Baltimore County residents attended a public safety town hall meeting Monday evening to voice concerns and hear from officials about initiatives to address crime. "I'm very concerned about the shootings, carjackings, things like that that are coming into our communities and pose a concern for a lot of our residents," resident Kelly Jackson said. The town hall held at the George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology in Towson followed two recent incidents, a fatal road rage shooting involving a Towson University student and a police shooting in Pikesville that left an officer injured. Baltimore County Police Chief Robert McCullough and Baltimore County State's Attorney Scott Shellenberger were among the officials present at the event, hearing from residents who raised concerns about traffic violations, juvenile crime and repeat offenders. Maryland Juvenile Services Secretary Betsy Fox Tolentino explained her department's approach to juvenile cases. "Very few of the young people brought to our attention have repeat offenses, meaning they've been found guilty of something before, but we want to make sure we have the best response when they come to our attention. Every felony offense, every misdemeanor handgun offense and every misdemeanor, when a young person is already on supervision, I have to give to the state's attorney so they can evaluate whether they want to prosecute that young person," Fox Tolentino said. The police chief outlined a new initiative aimed at improving public safety.
