Rule 11 is one of football's shortest rule, but also one if its most misunderstood.
In the early days of the sport, it became common for players players to "goal hang" - where players would just hang around their opponents goal and wait for a long ball to pick up an easy 1v1 against the keeper. This wasn't very entertaining, nor athletic, so the rule was first introduced in 1863.
