CLIFF HORNSBY: "STILL ABOVE GROUND"
Cliff Hornsby, now 84, is a Longboat Key, Florida–based stand-up comedian best known by his stage name Gerry Atric. Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, he began his comedy career at age 82 in 2022, launching a full-time stand-up career in his 80s after decades in other professions.
Hornsby spent 4 years in the U.S. Navy, earned a B.S. from Georgia State University, and graduated from the Georgia School of Banking and the North Texas Farrier School Florida Repertory Theatre. Before comedy, he worked in banking, real estate, Southern Gospel music, and even developed houses and cemeteries.
Hornsby studied at McCurdy’s Comedy Theatre and Humor Institute in Sarasota, where he first performed and earned the nickname “The Geezer” Your Observer. He entered the Third Round of Visani’s Italian Steakhouse and Comedy Theatre’s comedy contest, placing first in his round before being a runner-up in the Final Round in 2023 Florida Repertory Theatre. He has since outpunch-lined at least 40 seasoned and younger comedians in his first year on stage.
On stage, he performs as Gerry Atric, a clean, all-audience humorist whose relatable, age-positive style has earned him over 10 million social media views cliffhornsby.com. Known for his slow start to the stage but rapid-fire delivery, he blends personal stories with humor about aging, life, and the unexpected.
Hornsby’s comedic philosophy is simple: “For every negative in life, a positive can always be found.". He credits his family laughter after his first unofficial set for inspiring him to pursue comedy full-time.
Today, Cliff Hornsby continues to perform, mentor, and inspire, proving that it’s never too late to make people laugh.
