Classic Football Highlights from England vs West Germany at Wembley Stadium, played on 29 April 1972 in the Euro 1972 qualifying quarter-final first leg.
West Germany beat England 3-1 in front of around 96,800 fans, producing one of the most famous away performances ever seen at Wembley. Uli Hoeneß opened the scoring in the first half, before Francis Lee brought England level late in the match.
But the final minutes belonged to West Germany. Günter Netzer restored the lead from the penalty spot, and Gerd Müller added the third goal near the end to seal a landmark Wembley win for Helmut Schön’s side.
With Franz Beckenbauer captaining from the back, Netzer controlling the rhythm, Müller waiting for the decisive moment, and Hoeneß also on the scoresheet, West Germany took a huge step toward the Euro 1972 finals. For England, it was a painful night under Sir Alf Ramsey, despite the presence of Gordon Banks, Bobby Moore, Alan Ball, Martin Peters and Geoff Hurst.
