In the 1970s, the television market was led largely by American and European brands such as RCA, Philips, and Zenith, which benefited from the global boom of color television ownership as TVs became a standard household appliance. RCA was especially dominant in the United States through its strong distribution and pioneering work in color TV technology, while Philips became a major force in Europe through electronics manufacturing and innovation, and Zenith built a reputation for durable, high-quality televisions in North America. Over the decades, however, manufacturing power gradually shifted to Asia, and by 2026 the market is dominated by Samsung, LG, and Hisense. Samsung became the world’s leading TV seller through massive LCD and QLED production and premium positioning, LG established itself as a leader in OLED technology and premium displays, while Hisense rose rapidly by offering affordable large-screen smart TVs and expanding aggressively into global markets, reflecting the shift from Western TV dominance in the 1970s to Asian-led manufacturing and sales in the modern era.
