Exploring the Soviet heritage of the richest Ex-Soviet country and it is like a post-Soviet science fiction movie ;)
Estonia is today the richest ex-Soviet country by GDP per capita, famous for its digital infrastructure and modern economy — but I was surprised by how many Soviet relics, Brutalist buildings and examples of Soviet Modernism can still be found across the capital.
In this video, I explore Tallinn during the cold and dark month of February, searching for Soviet architecture, abandoned places and Russian-speaking neighborhoods far away from the tourist areas of the UNESCO World Heritage Old Town.
I visit the famous Linnahall — probably Estonia’s most iconic Soviet structure and one of the country’s most well-known lost places. Built for the 1980 Moscow Olympics, this abandoned Brutalist megastructure later appeared in Christopher Nolan’s film Tenet because of its cold futuristic atmosphere.
I also explore Lasnamäe, Tallinn’s massive Soviet housing district filled with endless concrete apartment blocks, wide roads and classic Khrushchyovka and panel building architecture. It was build to house 15% of the Estonian people. Even today, large parts of the district remain Russian-speaking, creating a fascinating cultural contrast to Tallinn’s medieval center.
Other locations include the Soviet Statues Exposition with old Lenin monuments, the futuristic Kosmos Cinema, underground Soviet garages, and the Maarjamäe Memorial — another monumental Soviet structure overlooking the Baltic Sea that was also featured in Tenet.
This is the first part of my Baltic States series focused on Soviet heritage, Brutalism, Soviet Modernism and abandoned architecture.
