The storm has really wreaked havoc in New Zealand. The North Island looks absolutely miserable today.

Cyclone Vaianu has made landfall in New Zealand, triggering widespread disruption, power outages, and emergency responses across the North Island.

Severe weather warnings remain in effect, with an orange heavy rain warning covering much of the country, including Northland, Auckland, the Coromandel, the Bay of Plenty, and Gisborne, as well as the central highlands and eastern Marlborough in the South Island.

A low-pressure system, named Vaianu, has made landfall across parts of New Zealand's North Island, bringing heavy rain and damaging winds.

Last night, wind gusts of up to 130 kilometers per hour were recorded in exposed coastal areas.

Thousands of homes experienced power outages, including nearly 4,000 in the western Bay of Plenty, with additional outages reported across Northland and the Coromandel.

Horizon Networks reported widespread power outages across the Eastern Bay region.

Some of these outages are likely to continue overnight due to the scale of the problem across the district, and because weather and wind conditions continue to hamper safe repairs.

Thames, North Island, saw a particularly grim scene today, with roads forced to close due to flooding at the Thames Golf Course.

Damaging winds exceeding 130 km/h were reported, with roads closed, and evacuations underway in several areas amid a widespread state of emergency.

Transport officials warned that further closures were likely, with flooding and dangerous winds making it unsafe to even install road signs in some cases.

Drivers were urged to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary and to exercise extreme caution on the roads.

Officials warn that the combination of strong winds, flooding, and landslides makes this a serious and unpredictable event.
Authorities continue to warn that conditions remain unpredictable, with strong winds, heavy rain, and the risk of flooding and landslides continuing.
The public is urged to avoid traveling on roads, follow official advice, and prioritize safety as Cyclone Vaianu continues to move across the country.

Road users should avoid traveling in bad weather.
If you absolutely must travel, reduce speed, maintain a safe following distance, and turn on your headlights.
Do not drive through standing water, even if it appears shallow.
Be alert for possible flooding, landslides, debris, and downed power lines.
