Most Popular Windows Version Market Share (2003-2025) | Bar Graph Race Visualization

Here's a visualization of the Windows market share, ranked from most popular to least in a given time period ranging from March 2003 to June 2025! This video is a bit different from what I usually make, but I've always wanted to make a visualization like this, so I spent some time working on it.
This also serves as an update for my now-deleted version of this video from five years ago. There are also descriptions given which describe in detail the events of each time period in question.

Market share data retrieved from W3Schools and StatCounter respectively. Keep in mind that these are sampled data and are not complete representations of population data.

Data from March 2003 to December 2008 are from W3Schools.
Data from January 2009 to June 2025 are from StatCounter.

I initially wanted to bring the compiled data at least down to 1995 or somewhere around that, but I couldn't find any good resources for pre-compiled market shares, and I don't have an idea of how to calculate sales figures properly, so I decided to go with what was already there. I may make an updated version of this, though.

There were several calculations I had to do with data from W3Schools as it had some confounding that I had to remove. There were also extra calculations made, such as linear interpolation, to make it compatible with the graphing software I used (Flourish). The self-compiled data, in line graph format and without the interpolation, can be found at the near end of the video.

Since the data from W3Schools included other operating systems such as Linux and Mac, as well as a hidden "Other OS" share (When adding all of the original percentages up, they do not add up to 100%), I had to remove the two data alongside the hidden "Other OS" market share. Then, I added all percentages for Windows operating systems up and divided each Windows version market share by the total percentage to calculate the "true" market share from 0-100%. Then, some linear interpolation for every other month from March 2003 to December 2008 made it compatible with Flourish, which was done by adding the previous data and the data after and dividing it by 2.

In addition, as Windows Server versions were not used by most consumers, I decided to include that in the Other section of the modified data. This is relevant for both W3Schools and StatCounter. Windows NT 4.0 and 2000 were both exceptions as it still contained a non-server version, though the percentage is still confounded by their respective Server editions which may have altered the percentages.

Hopefully this explains the methods I did in compiling this data together!
