Can you still use Windows XP in 2026?

Windows XP, released in late 2001, is not really something you'd expect to be fairly usable in 2026. But is it? After all, there's a community of people who continue to experiment and play with Windows XP, resulting in numerous projects such as Legacy Update, Supermium and OneCore, even if they don't recommend using old versions of Windows like this.

As just stated, Windows XP was released in 2001, after roughly two years of development and based off of Windows 2000. It was the first version of Windows NT aimed at home users, and sold phenomenally, and holding prominent market share for over a decade after its release, still making up 20% of all online Windows installs as of its end of support in 2014. It introduced several features taken for granted in Windows today, and arguably held one of the longest timespans as the latest version of Windows, alongside Windows 10. Windows XP was replaced by Windows Vista in 2007, however many stayed on XP after Windows Vista got off to a horrible start. Oddly enough, Windows XP has occasionally received updates to address security vulnerabilities, particularly in 2016 and 2019 to address WannaCry and BlueKeep, despite support for XP ending in 2014.

As to how usable XP is in 2026, I opted to try using some software and try browsing the web on it to determine if it can still be a daily driver OS in theory. It should be noted that I am not endorsing the continued use of an OS from almost 25 years ago for daily purposes, and I have an understanding of the issues/risks of using such obsolete software. Most people usually use computers for basic tasks like web browsing, and with a lot of modern technology being powered by web apps, it partially removes some of the barriers to using an old OS.
