25 Years Ago: The Games of 2001! How Many Did You Play?

A look at 100 games that were released in the year 2001!

This was one of the biggest years in gaming history, as we saw the introduction of two new consoles; Microsoft's Xbox made its debut and Nintendo released its GameCube and Game Boy Advance, bringing along some exciting launch titles.

The PlayStation 2 entered its second year and was starting to grow a strong library, while the Dreamcast - launched just two earlier - was discontinued by Sega. Despite that, the Dreamcast was still receiving a steady stream of titles, as we were the aging PS1 and Nintendo 64. Even Nintendo's GameBoy Color was still getting some love. And of course, the PC was, as always, also a healthy option for gamers.

Some notable franchises received their first entries this year: series such as Devil May Cry, Halo, Fatal Frame, Burnout, Serious Sam and Max Payne made their debut; and already-established franchises continued, with new entries in series like Resident Evil, Wolfenstein, Civilization and Super Smash Brothers! And the Grand Theft Auto series received its 3rd entry, ushering in a whole new era of gaming...

All in all an amazing year for gaming!
