Severe weather continues to hit several states across the United States tonight.
The hardest-hit area is Illinois, where monster hail and a large, powerful tornado have been reported.
Since the afternoon, several areas of Illinois have been hit by extreme weather, with a large, powerful tornado and heavy hail hitting Kankakee County on Tuesday night, March 10, 2026.
The tornado touched down near the Kankakee Fairgrounds, about 57 miles (91.7 kilometers) south of Chicago, before moving northeast toward Aroma Park, where it caused extensive damage, according to the Kankakee County Sheriff's Office.
Kankakee County Sheriff Mike Downey said in a statement that several parts of our community were devastated Tuesday night by the storm, damaging numerous buildings with partially torn roofs, collapsed walls, downed trees, downed power lines, and scattered debris.
Fortunately, we have not received any reports of fatalities at this time, but several injuries have been confirmed.
He reiterated his reminder to residents to check on their neighbors and loved ones, but to avoid unnecessary travel whenever possible.
Kankakee County Sheriff Mike Downey, Kankakee County Council Chairman Matthew Alexander-Hildebrand, and Kankakee Mayor Chris Curtis have filed an emergency declaration with the State of Illinois requesting disaster assistance in connection with the tornado and severe thunderstorms.
The Kankakee County Sheriff continued, noting that downed power lines were reported throughout the county and urged residents to "use caution if you are driving around the area."
Furthermore, the city's 911 Emergency Services Center (KanComm) is being overwhelmed with emergency calls.
The City of Kankakee stated that both the city and surrounding areas have been "severely impacted" by the "high wind event" and urged residents to avoid all roadways south of Kankakee and towards Aroma Park.
City officials advised Kankakee County residents to stay off roadways, avoid damaged areas, and allow safe access for rescue workers.
The community now faces a long and difficult recovery.
Earlier, the National Weather Service had issued a warning for severe storms bringing rain and hail to parts of the Midwest, threatening powerful tornadoes, damaging winds, and very large hail, from the southern Plains to the southern Great Lakes region.
States from Texas to Michigan were under a tornado warning.
