On 23 December 2009, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was interviewed by ITN’s Jon Snow at the 14th‑century shrine of the poet Hafez in Shiraz. He spoke through a translator. In the aftermath of Iran’s disputed 2009 presidential election, as clashes continued between police and protesters, Ahmadinejad denied allegations of intimidation against political opponents and warned Western governments not to underestimate Iran amid mounting pressure over its nuclear programme. Ahmadinejad, who served as president from 2005 to 2013 after previously serving as mayor of Tehran, became one of the most polarising figures in modern Iranian politics.
