Here in Yunnan, we call custard apple “Ma Wo Zha,” a name transliterated from the Dai language. That was the oldest variety. Today’s custard apples have been grafted and improved several times—thick flesh, fewer seeds, and incredibly sweet juice. It’s honestly one of the sweetest fruits I’ve ever tasted.
Yuanmou is known as the hometown of custard apples. Its unique highland river-valley climate allows the fruit to steadily reach around 25 Brix in sweetness. During the holidays, we always like to enjoy something sweet. This year, custard apple is the perfect choice for the Lantern Festival—especially paired with soft, chewy tangyuan.
After the Lantern Festival, the New Year truly feels complete. May this year continue to be sweet and smooth for all of us, with every wish coming true.
