Five years have passed since we saw Tony Stark walk away from the screen for the last time and Robert Downey Jr steps back into that role with a completely new character — broken, battered, with a right arm that is barely functional, and with a massive burden of being responsible for a universe that built monuments above his head while he was still alive inside a cryo-pod buried under the Swiss Alps.
Tony Stark’s last great act of genius, using the anti-life serum that would keep him alive, was a fail-safe that nobody knew existed because Tony Stark is always at least three moves ahead of everyone else in the room, even death itself.
Tom Cruise as Victor Vale is the type of villain that can cut to the quick because he isn’t chaos, he is a blueprint — a man with a legitimate grievance who spent five years of Tony’s absence building an empire, stealing classified technology, and creating a superior iron man suit that is silver grey, with the same patient approach that Victor Vale had known that his day would come.
Mads Mikkelsen brings an intelligent menace to Dr. Marcus Veil; the Extremis army is no longer just a tool, it is a philosophy taken too far and with that, the Extremis army takes on a whole different level of menacing.
And, of course, there is Tom Holland as Peter Parker coming back to grieve his mentor one last time before putting on a suit next to Tony in an underground workshop under Queens, which is the heart and soul of this concept.
This Mark 86 was not created for elegance, it was built for war, dark matte crimson and gold rising over a burning Manhattan as the man wearing the twisted mirror image of all that Tony Stark has built — this final showdown between the man that earned the armor and the man that just stole it will carry a much heavier thematic weight than any punch landed in the battle.
