Best of Bodø: Norway’s Unexpected Arctic Culture City

Bodø is often treated as a place you pass through on the way further north. But spend a little time here and a very different picture emerges.

Once known mainly as a transport hub at the edge of the Arctic, Bodø has quietly grown into one of Norway’s most confident cultural cities. Its year as European Capital of Culture helped shine a light on what was already happening, but the real story runs deeper.

This is a city shaped by wind, weather, and the sea, where culture works with nature rather than trying to soften it.

In this video, I explore why Bodø feels different from other small cities in Northern Norway. From architecture and public spaces to design, art, and everyday life, this is an Arctic city that has learned to lean into its environment and build identity from it.

I’m David. I live in Norway and spend a lot of time exploring places that surprise people who think they already know the country. If you’re interested in travel beyond the obvious highlights, you’re in the right place.
