The town of Pindal was hit by heavy rains that began at 6:00 PM and ended at 11:00 PM, clogging stormwater drains along the Pindal-San Francisco-Celica road, diverting rainwater into the town center and flooding more than 20 homes and businesses.
Debris, rocks, and mud entered the homes of Pindal residents.
Affected residents attempted to move their belongings to safety, but were unsuccessful.
This situation caused great concern among local residents, as this was not the first time this had happened.
Several homes were affected and severely damaged on Avenida 18 de Noviembre, and vehicles were swept away by the rain.
Favio Enríquez, the cantonal coordinator, explained that a landslide had blocked access roads to the community. Residents were isolated. The City Government, through the Public Works Department, was clearing the Pindal-Milagros road, but this was not enough to help other affected areas.
A total of 60 families were severely affected by the storm.
Some families were more severely affected than others.
The city center wasn't the only area affected.
Heavy rains destroyed several homes in the neighborhoods of Roblones, El Aji, Chaquinal, 12 de Diciembre, Pindal, La Rota, and El Carmen. The rains also damaged corn fields.
Authorities declared a state of emergency in the canton of Pindal due to the ongoing flooding in the area.
Unstable weather conditions are expected in the area for the next few days.
