U.S. military aircraft have staged at Sofia International Airport, prompting the temporary suspension of civilian flights over the weekend, according to airport data.
Footage shows multiple U.S. Air Force aircraft at the Bulgarian capital’s main airport. Flight tracking data indicates non-military operations will pause during two overnight windows.
Local observers describe the deployment as one of Washington’s largest recent air force movements to Europe and the Middle East, reportedly including aerial refuelling tankers and heavy transport aircraft.
Bulgaria’s Defence Ministry confirmed the presence of U.S. aircraft, saying the deployment is linked to NATO’s Enhanced Vigilance Activities training exercises.
The move comes amid heightened tensions following reports that Washington may be preparing for possible military action against Iran.
Officials have not announced any combat operations, and authorities describe the activity as part of allied military coordination.
