The film follows Michael Gold (Brandon Lee), a mercenary hired by the CIA to extract Professor Braun, a leading laser weapons expert, from an unstable African country (implied to be the fictional Kavango). Gold initially fails, leading to a massive $1 million bounty mission. Gold returns to track Braun and teams up with Braun’s beautiful but suspicious daughter, Alyssa Braun (a KGB contact). They are pursued across the desert by the ruthless soldier of fortune Echart and his forces. The climax occurs at a remote mine where the villain, using the massive Verbeque Diamond in conjunction with Braun's laser technology, plans to create a nuclear weapon. Gold succeeds in rescuing Braun and Alyssa, and securing both the diamond and Braun's research, ultimately preventing a global catastrophe.
