Major flooding occurred when the Crati River overflowed its banks in Laghi di Sibari, Calabria, on Saturday, February 14th, after the river had previously overflowed in Tarsia.
The river reached a height of 5.5 meters, overflowing its natural banks between Corigliano-Rossano and the Cassano all'Ionio area, causing flooding in the districts of Lattughelle, Piano Scafo, and Casa Bianca—better known as Lake Sibari—as well as the archaeological area of Sibari.
The flooding caused extensive damage to residents, private homes, and agricultural infrastructure, in some cases requiring the evacuation of residents.
The region of Calabria has declared a national state of emergency and a state of agricultural disaster following the flooding of the Crati River in the Sibari Plain.
The Mayor has declared a state of emergency in the devastated areas of the province of Cosenza (Tarsia, Lake Sibari, Ferramonti).
In these difficult times, we express our sincere and profound gratitude to all the individuals, associations, accommodation facilities, and volunteers who generously rushed to help the affected residents, concluded the Mayor.
In Tarsia, in the Ferramonti area, the Crati River also overflowed earlier, sweeping everything away.
Farms, homes, and even the future of green energy, with entire photovoltaic plants, were submerged in mud. While Civil Protection and residents struggled through the mud to save their livestock, the strength of the community that refused to give up was evident.
