Eyes Wide Shut was released by Warner Bros. Pictures on 16 July 1999.
The international release of the film was primed by its prestigious opening night slot at the 1999 Venice Film Festival. Kubrick generally did not show his films at festivals, as he preferred to premiere them for the public, but Venice had always shown an affinity for Kubrick and had presented him a Career Golden Lion in 1997.
His long-time executive producer Jan Harlan said, "I don't think we thought of this at the time it was first offered to us, but Venice is the ideal launch. It is the perfect opening for Europe, and though it's unusual for one of Stanley's films to open this way, it is best for his final film."
The film was an international box office success, surpassing $155 million.
