Reviews of weather events, natural disasters, astronomical phenomena and wildlife around the world
A wave of severe weather continues to batter the Mediterranean region. Following Italy, a powerful storm hit Greece, bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms, gale-force winds and snowfall in the mountains. Numerous floods occurred in the Greek capital, Athens, and its suburbs. Torrents of water mixed with sand and rocks descended on the city, blocking roads and sweeping away cars.
A state of emergency was declared in six regions – the Peloponnese, central Greece, Greater Athens, Thessaly, the northern Aegean, and western Macedonia. Emergency text messages were sent to residents of Athens, Viotia, and Evia, urging them to restrict movement. Fire services responded to numerous calls for water pumping, particularly in the northeastern suburbs of Athens, such as Papagou and Cholargos. In Agios Dimitrios (southern Athens), three houses located near a flooded stream were evacuated as a precaution.
In the southern Athens suburb of Glyfada, flash flooding occurred due to heavy rainfall. In a short time, streets were flooded, traffic was paralyzed, and cars were swept away by the torrential waters. In one such incident, a car was swept away by floodwaters, killing a woman. The rains caused widespread flooding not only in Athens but also in other parts of the country. Fire services received hundreds of calls, roads were temporarily closed, and public transportation and power outages were reported. Ferry services were suspended throughout the country, with the exception of large vessels serving the Saronic Gulf islands, Hydra, and Spetses. Mudflows buried and damaged numerous cars, which local residents are now digging out of the rubble. The flooding also caused significant damage to agricultural land and livestock farms.
