🧭 Plot Summary
The film is a biographical drama about the life of Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky (1839–1881) — one of the members of the influential composers’ circle known as “The Five” (Balakirev, Borodin, Cui, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov).
It follows Mussorgsky’s journey:
Starting as a government clerk in St. Petersburg around 1858, he composed in his spare time.
His growing awareness of the hardships of peasants and social injustice deeply influences his music.
His early, unsuccessful attempts at writing an opera (The Marriage, after Gogol).
His major work, Boris Godunov, faced censorship and rejection before eventually becoming a triumph.
His struggles with poverty, alcoholism, and the creative loneliness of an uncompromising artist.
